John Cocke Letter

Abstract

In this letter, John Cocke orders Colonel Ewen Allison (stationed in Greeneville, Tennessee) to ready a brigade of men to repel what Cocke fears is a forthcoming attack by the Creek tribe. Allison is further instructed not only to repel them but to chastise them. Cocke closes by reminding Allison be careful not to mistreat peaceable Indigenous people but treat them with hospitality and friendship.

Charles Watts wrote this letter to his sister, Helen M. Watts, from Nashville, Tennessee on October 11, 1813. In it, he describes his journey from Lexington to Nashville (including a saltpeter cave he visited and his meeting with Lorenzo Dow), responds to news that Helen Watts sent in her last letter, and asks after his family and friends.

Spence Family Ledger and Diary

Abstract Collection contains a bound notebook used by the Spence family from 1813-1862. Half of the book is a ledger for Porter & Spence, a middle Tennessee company partly owned by John Spence. The ledger contains receipts, copies of invoices, and a comprehensive inventory of merchandise for the company from 1813-1821. Rhea County Land Records

Abstract

This manuscript is composed of eight typed pages of land ownership records for Washington and Southern Liberties, Tennessee dating from 1813 to 1860. Also included are three pages of sketched plat maps and one page regarding Mrs. Martha Gist's death in 1831. Mrs. C. P. (Virginia) Kelley transcribed all of these records in 1966 and indicated the source of each item (including newspaper articles, deed indices, and tax lists) at the beginning of the relevant section.

Abstract This muster roll lists the names and ranks of the 85 men serving in the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Militia under Captain William McKay from June 20, 1814, to January 27, 1815. Andrew Jackson Letter Transcript

This collection contains the transcription of a letter written to President James Monroe by General Andrew Jackson in January of 1815. The document contains Jackson's description of the Battle of New Orleans, including Jackson's narrative timeline, the number of dead and wounded (on both sides), and atmosphere of the battle. The original letter was written in 1815, but it is unknown when this copy was transcribed.
